The stories of some well-known people who grew up in Appalachia, like Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, are legendary. But, hundreds of thousands of everyday people growing up there usually goes mostly unnoted, unless they write a book. Such is the story of Judy Martin. Judy and her family are friends to my wife and me. We are their pastors and appreciate them very much. Judy asked me to write a foreword to her book and I am pleased to do that. My biggest problem in doing so is that it’s not that I have trouble knowing what to say, but rather, not knowing what not to say.
In Judy’s story, as in so many others raised in hard times, most of us didn’t know we didn’t have stuff because we had what we needed. Judy was raised to believe that Jesus would provide everything we needed if we had faith. She put that into practice day by day from a child even until now, depending on God to meet every need as she worked hard and believed Him. In this book, you’ll find miracles-physically, spiritually, emotionally, financially, and in every other way. Her story reminds me of a great song a few years ago- “Love will keep us together.” Real family love has a way of doing that.
Open your heart, get a box of Kleenex, and enjoy this heartfelt story of one woman’s journey to the peace, joy, and contentment as she applies her faith to every area of her life. May God richly bless you as you experience “real life” on a personal level in the pages of this book.
